Home Cinema
The demand for high quality audio for home cinema is growing with the advent of newer and newer sound formats, mainly being driven by the new technologies of Blu Ray and HD-DVD. Whilst there are many home cinema speaker packages on the market – the majority of them are made down to a price and consequently cannot cope with the large dynamic range imposed by the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks now commonly found on most DVD’s Blu Ray and HD-DVD discs.
The newer formats of True-HD, Dolby® Digital Plus, and DTS® HD will place a further burden on the speaker system – and therefore only specially designed high quality speakers will fit the bill.
The most important loudspeaker for Home Cinema is the centre channel speaker – as this carries the film dialogue, and therefore more information than the effects speakers that are places around the room. Invariably the design of this speaker is a compromise with many expensive units having a restricted bandwidth – usually in the range 50 – 60Hz to 20KHz or thereabouts. Whilst the LFE speaker will add the lower register – the sound coming from a centre speaker supplemented by a SLE sub woofer at another room location can be a bit disorienting – and therefore unnatural.
The LFE sub woofer unit itself is often a compromise in both in extension and slam, and can sound boomy or flabby if the speaker unit is not tightly controlled by the on board electronics. The surround speakers need to convey an atmosphere of reality – adding movement within the listening environment and seamlessly integrating with both the centre channel speaker and the LFE sub woofer.
